Poplar is ideal for painted components due to its smooth texture. For stained finishes, Maple, Red Oak, and Beech bring clean grain definition and color consistency which is great for interior stair parts, columns, and custom woodwork.

For a comprehensive breakdown of species, see our Wood Species Guide, where we explain which woods are best for paint, stain, and interior applications.

When to Choose Paint vs. Stain for Interiors

Paint is able to perform well when you want a uniform color and to downplay the grain. Stain is the better choice when you want the wood’s grain and character to show. Painted parts pair well with simpler profiles or modern trim schemes. Stained components highlight figure and contrast. Due to this, many will opt for stain for handrails, stair parts, mantels, decorative columns, and more.

Best Species for Painted Interior Pieces

Poplar can be a go-to for paint. It has a smooth grain with minimal tannins, it’s easy to machine, and it’s typically cost-effective. It also primers beautifully and lays down a consistent surface. Soft Maple can also be painted cleanly when you want a bit more hardness than Poplar. For impact-prone parts like newels and rails that still get paint, Hard Maple adds dent resistance.

Best Species for Stained Interior Pieces

Hard Maple has a fine, even look with light tones (use a pre-stain conditioner for ultra-even results). Red Oak gives a classic open-grain appearance that takes medium-to-dark stains exceptionally well. It’s ideal for stair rails and furniture accents. Beech has a uniform texture and consistent color that finishes evenly with light to medium stains. For richer warmth, Walnut and Cherry can elevate interiors, and both benefit from clear or lightly toned finishes.
