Choosing the Right Species for Exterior Millwork

Exterior millwork (columns, railings, etc.) can consistently be exposed to moisture and temperature swings. The best wood species balance durability, stability, and finish performance. Cypress, Sapele, and African Mahogany are examples of species that stand out because they resist decay, hold paint and finish well, and remain stable over time.

These species perform far better outdoors than softwoods, which can swell, check, or rot when exposed to outdoor elements.

Top Species for Exterior Applications

  • Cypress: A lightweight softwood with natural oils that resist insects. Excellent for painted columns, trim, and porch details in humid climates. It’s easy to machine and maintain.

  • Sapele: A stable hardwood with interlocking grain. Excellent for high-end architectural details. Ideal for stained or clear-finished work and resists movement and surface checking.

  • African Mahogany: Offers the warm tone and workability of Genuine Mahogany at a more consistent cost and availability. Used in both paint- and stain-grade millwork and often chosen for large or decorative exterior columns.

For paint-only applications, Cypress or primed Sapele are typically the best value. For stain-grade or exposed grain work, Sapele and African Mahogany deliver great long-term appearance.
