For exterior columns, Cypress and Mahogany are often chosen due to their natural resistance to rot. Sapele and African Mahogany are also excellent options as they offer rich color and durability similar to true mahogany, often at a lower cost.

What matters most for exterior columns?

Choosing a species is only part of your decision. Exterior columns live with and must endure sun, rain, and movement, so rot resistance, stability, and clean grain matter. In production, we also look at how the column is built. For example, type of construction for stability, adhesive type rated for exterior use, and whether the column is supplied unfinished, primed, or finish-ready.

Painted vs. Stained Columns: Finishing Guidance

For painted columns, multiple thin coats of high-quality exterior paint outperform one heavy coat. For stained/clear columns, use a UV-inhibiting exterior finish, and re-coat on a schedule appropriate to your climate and exposure.

Construction Details That Extend Service Life

Method matters just as much as material! Laminated/staved construction can reduce checking and seasonal movement. Specify adhesives, end-grain sealing, and consistent profiles. For load-bearing designs, supply drawings or load requirements so we can align species, dimensions, and joinery with structural needs.
