Crafting a Custom Poplar Island Base

Are you in search of a custom wooden piece that perfectly fits your needs? H. Arnold Wood Turning specializes in creating tailor-made wooden products that cater to your unique requirements.

In today’s case study, we’ll delve into the process of crafting a poplar island base for one of our valued customers, from their initial inquiry to the finished product.

Step 1: Customer Inspiration

This custom poplar island base project began with a photograph. Our customer discovered a beautiful island base in an image that caught her eye. Impressed by the design, she envisioned having a similar base with specific dimensions to suit her space. She reached out to us with the photograph (shown below) and her request.

Step 2: Transforming Vision into Design

With the photograph above as our starting point, our team worked diligently to turn her vision into a practical plan. Through close collaboration with the customer, we arrived at a drawing that closely resembled her vision for the base.

During this drawing phase, we carefully considered the customer’s specified dimensions and requirements. We ensured that each detail aligned with her needs. Additionally, we discussed her preferences for wood type and finish. Although we do not finish these types of bases, it is important to understand the end goal and what the client is trying to achieve. This enables us to choose the appropriate wood species.

Step 3: Crafting The Poplar Island Base

Once the customer approved the drawing, we proceeded to the next phase. Our team selected the ideal wood for the project, poplar, known for its versatility and ease of use.

The poplar wood was shaped, turning it into a beautifully tapered island base. It matched the specified dimensions and design. The base was then prepared to ship to the customer.

The Final Product: A Perfected Poplar Base

When the poplar island base was shipped and presented to the customer, she was happy to find that the piece matched her preferences perfectly. The base was smooth and ready to paint or stain depending on the desired look. Below is a photo of the final, unfinished product.
