Built to match the home, but designed to look like they’ve always been there.

When replacing porch columns, most homeowners run the issue of new columns not fitting quite right. They may fit standard dimensions, but there is something visually off about seeing columns that stand out instead of blending into the home’s exterior design.

This project focused on solving that exact problem.

The goal here was to create paint grade exterior wood columns that looked original to the house while still being built for long-term outdoor performance.

Project Overview

This project involved the design and production of custom exterior wood columns for a front porch renovation. The homeowner requested columns that would fulfill the following specifications:

  • Matched the architectural style of the home

  • Felt historically appropriate

  • Held up to exterior conditions

  • Could be painted to match the existing color scheme

Rather than settling for off-the-shelf options, the project required a fully custom solution built from the ground up.

The Process

We began with a reference from an eBay listing that contained a design that the customer wanted to emulate. Our goal was to translate that inspiration into a buildable column design that would look correct once installed.

The final approved design included:

  • 6” diameter straight shaft

  • 99” overall height (OAL)

  • A turned base and capital with proportions tailored to the home

To improve handling and installation, each column was designed to be built in three separate sections:

  • Top (capital)

  • Main shaft

  • Bottom (base)

This approach allowed for easier transport and installation, and resulted in a design that was both accurate and practical (two things that don’t always come together in standard column products).

Material and Construction Details

These columns were produced using sapele, which is a hardwood selected for its strength in exterior environments. Even for paint-grade applications, material selection matters!

For this project, the columns were built as:

  • Solid wood construction (no through hole)

  • Exterior-rated for long-term outdoor use

  • Paint-grade finish that was ready for on-site painting

  • Separate cap and base components shipped unassembled

Each column was supplied to match the approved specifications and remain consistent across all pieces, which is important when multiple columns are installed side by side on a visible front porch.

Why Paint Grade Exterior Wood Columns Were the Right Fit

If you’re a homeowner that is considering exterior columns, there are several material options available, such as PVC, fiberglass, and hollow composite columns, among others.

In this case, the customer chose wood for a few key reasons:

  • Design flexibility: custom wood turning allows for better control over proportions, profiles, and transitions
  • Architectural accuracy: wood columns can be shaped to match traditional styles more closely than many synthetic alternatives
  • Structural integrity: solid wood construction provides reliable performance for exterior applications

  • Finish control: paint-grade columns allow the final finish to be matched to the home

For a project where the main objective is to make the columns look original and not newly added, wood remains one of the strongest options to work with.

The Finished Result

Once installed and painted, the columns achieved the desired effect.

They didn’t do this by drawing attention to themselves, but rather, by completing the home. The proportions of the columns aligned with the porch, the detailing was consistent with the architecture, and the look appeared cohesive from the street.

These details are often the difference between a standard replacement and a custom solution. One looks like an update, while the other looks like it has always been there.

Customer Feedback

“We appreciate your guidance and patience. The columns look like they have been here from the 1800’s.
Have had so many compliments on them. Our builders raved about the quality and how perfectly packaged.
We are on a busy corner–lots of walkers and dog walkers comment on the columns and porch.”

This feedback speaks to more than just the product. It reflects how the project performs in the real world. Neighbors notice and builders recognize the quality, both visually and structurally.

Key Takeaways from This Project

If you’re planning a porch renovation or replacing existing columns, this project highlights some important points:

  • Custom columns allow you to match your home instead of adapting to standard designs

  • Paint-grade wood offers flexibility in finish while maintaining strength

  • Material choice still impacts durability, even when the final product is painted

  • Accurate components simplify installation without affecting the final look

  • Small details in proportion and design have a major impact once installed

These are just a few of the factors that separate a functional replacement from a finished result that fits the home.
